Unique Low Impact Treehouse | Bedford Hills Real Estate

Image
The so-called Dom’Up is an innovative treehouse, which is easy to install, and has virtually no impact on the trees used to support it. It was created by Holland-based arborculturist Bruno de Grunne and architect Nicolas d’Ursel from the organization Trees and People. The treehouse can be used as an alternative to the classic treehouse, for glamping, or even as a treetop office, resort or even a cool restaurant. The Dom’Up is a lightweight, UV-resistant canvas tent shelter that stretches over a 172 square foot (16 sq m) octagonal platform. The treehouse is suspended using Trees and People’s No Trace arboreal fixing system, which was designed with the idea of utilizing space between trees, rather than a single tree, since the former offers more space. Using more that one tree to support the structure also means the weight can be distributed more equally and therefore having very little negative impact on them. The Dom’Up also features protective roofing, which is made from du...

Housing Stumbling in Slowest Season for U.S.: Mortgages | Bedford Hills Real Estate

Just when the stumbling U.S. housing market could use a boost, it’s entering the slowest period of the year. Online home searches, an indicator of demand, peak from March through August, according to Trulia, a real estate information firm that studied three years of its search activity. By September, as summer ends and children start school, searches fall below the annual average and decline further until December. The seasonal slowdown means a turnaround in the housing market is unlikely for the rest of this year. After a robust 2013, new and existing home sales are down from a year ago even with inventories up and mortgage rates holding close to record lows. The pace of new-home purchases fell to the slowest in four months in July as rising prices and tight credit kept buyers at bay and forced economists to lower forecasts. “The first half of the year has definitely been disappointing,” said Joel Kan, director of economic forecasting at the Mortgage Bankers Association . “The...

Kate Bosworth sells home to Vince Vaughn | #BedfordHills Real Estate

Image
It appears Vince Vaughn has moved on from crashing weddings to buying newlyweds’ homes. Actress Kate Bosworth, who had a country wedding this spring, listed her Hollywood Hills home for $2.499 million in April. Property records confirm Vaughn just scooped up the property for $2.375 million. ( Click here or on a photo for a slideshow. ) With 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths in about 3,000 square feet, the house is smaller than Vaughn’s La Cañada Flintridge colonial , which Variety aptly called a “Beaver Cleaver-worthy five bedroom.” Vaughn and wife Kyla Weber purchased the home last year to make way for baby No. 2. Vince Vaughn, shown in November 2013, paid a little under $2.4 million. (Photo by Daniel Zuchnik/WireImage) Their new place, by contrast, has an unassuming exterior tucked behind a row of trees. Inside, the 1955 midcentury has been updated with exposed beams, a chef’s kitchen and rich, espresso-stained hardwoods. Other highlights include a spa-like master bath with a jett...

Bottom falls out as mortgage applications plunge 9.2% | Bedford Hills Real Estate

A week after unexpectedly jumping 10.3% last week , mortgage applications returned to their declining trend despite near year-low interest rates. Applications dropped 9.2% from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending June 13, 2014. The Market Composite Index, a measure of mortgage loan application volume, decreased 9.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis from one week earlier. The Refinance Index decreased 13% from the previous week. The seasonally adjusted Purchase Index decreased 5% from one week earlier. “Interest rates increased relative to the previous week, as incoming economic data continues to suggest a pickup in the pace of growth,” said Mike Fratantoni, MBA’s Chief Economist. “Although the average rate for the week was up only a few basis points, the increase was matched by a large drop in refinance volume, and purchase application volume also declined. Some lenders continue...

Towering Above London in a 7-Story Home | Bedford Hills Real Estate

Image
As once-industrial portions of cities are being transformed into neighborhoods for living and working, the future of buildings that served as factories, warehouses and more is coming into question. Should they be torn down? Or renovated for uses compatible with an area’s evolution? The latter is what happened with a listed (landmark) Victorian-era water tower in the Kennington district of central London, which couple Leigh Osborne and Graham Voce transformed into a seven-story residence. Houzz at a Glance Built for: Leigh Osborne and Graham Voce Location: Kennington, London Design-build architects : ACR Architects Size: 4,482 square feet (416 square meters); 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms LeichtUSA Save to Ideabook Email Photo The project was documented on the 100th episode of the TV show Grand Design s. Cuomo Lead Narrows Slightly In Potential All-Westchester Race With Astorino | Bedford Hills Real Estate

A Siena College poll of New York State voters shows Gov. Andrew Cuomo still enjoys a better than two-to-one advantage over Westchester County Executive and GOP gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, though the gap has narrowed slightly since the last poll. While Cuomo, a New Castle resident, still enjoys a 58-28 percent lead over Astorino, a Mount Pleasant resident, in a head-to-head race, his advantage has dwindled slightly since Siena's poll last month that had Cuomo out in front 61-26 percent. The real game changer in this election, according to Siena, would be the addition of a Working Families Party candidate. Should the WFP back a candidate that is viewed as more liberal or progressive than Cuomo, the split becomes 39 percent for Cuomo and 24 percent each for Astorino and the WFP candidate. “While Cuomo continues to hold a dominant position in a head-to-head matchup against Astorino, his lead is cut in half when a WFP candidate perceived to be more liberal or progressiv...

Realtor.com frets Samuelson took knowledge of secret projects with him to Zillow | Bedford Hills Real Estate

In a lawsuit that seeks to prevent former realtor.com President Errol Samuelson from working for rival Zillow, Move Inc. and the National Association of Realtors say Samuelson was privy to two secret, yet-to-be-launched realtor.com projects — one that would provide “new consumer functionality” and the other which is “the modification of a major product.” Filings in the case reveal that Samuelson’s would-be successor at Move, Curt Beardsley, was worried about the speed at which he would be expected to execute a plan to “save ListHub,” Move’s listing syndication subsidiary. Beardsley ended up following Samuelson to Zillow. Move and NAR filed a lawsuit against Zillow and Samuelson for alleged breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and misappropriation of trade secrets on March 17, less than two weeks after Samuelson unexpectedly jumped ship to become Zillow’s new chief industry development officer. In a motion for a preliminary injunction filed on March 27, an attorney for M...

At the height of Seattle's real estate market in 2003, when Leah and Chad Steen bought their first home, the property was far from picture perfect. "There was no landscaping; the previous owners even left us a note about the sad-looking Charlie Brown tree in the front yard," says Leah, who owns Revival Home & Garden ( revivalhomeandgarden.com ), a shop in Capitol Hill. "But the house had tons of character, and there weren't holes in the ceiling, like other places we'd seen." Inexpensive mingles with high-end Mix high and low Inexpensive furniture mingles with high-end touches in the living room: Ikea curtains hang on plumbing pipe behind a $1,200 chandelier from Leah's shop; custom pillows sit atop a bargain (at $579) settee from Urban Outfitters; a hand-painted chinoiserie coffee table rests on an old Pakistani rug ($85 on eBay). How to Build an A-Frame | Bedford Hills Real Estate

The following is an excerpt from Cabins & Cottages (Fox Chapel Publishing, 2011). Ready to make the leap from sheds and chicken coops to larger-scale DIY projects? Or just looking to expand your repertoire of carpentry skills? Meet Cabins & Cottages , your comprehensive resource for building simple, affordable, permanent living spaces. From the woodworking and crafting pros at Fox Chapel Publishing, Cabins & Cottages leaves no know-how stone unturned, and it details how to design and build your structures to withstand some of the worst Mother Nature can dish out (heavy snow, flooding, high winds), making the book a worthy companion for any builder. This excerpt is from Chapter 3, “Four Simple Structures.” One of the sturdiest of all structures is the A-frame, whose skeleton consists simply of a row of triangles. The bases of the triangles are the joists that support the floor, and the sides are the rafters that hold the combined walls and roof. The simplicit...
