Under Jeb Bush, housing prices fueled Florida’s boom | North Salem Real Estate

Image
On the campaign trail, Jeb Bush has repeatedly emphasized his record overseeing Florida’s boom economy as the state’s governor. He says it’s an example of an economy that created a huge number of jobs and benefited the middle class — an example of what he could do as president. “I know how to do this,” he said in Maitland, Fla., on Monday. But according to interviews with economists and a review of data, Florida owed a substantial portion of its growth under Bush not to any state policies but to a massive and unsustainable housing bubble — one that ultimately benefited rich investors at the expense of middle-class families. The bubble, one of the biggest in the nation, drove up home prices and had many short-term benefits for the state, spurring construction, spending and jobs. But the collapse of the housing bubble as Bush left office in 2007, after eight years of service, sent Florida into a recession deeper than that in the rest of the country, and hundreds of thousands lost th...

Case-Shiller: October Price Increases Reach 13.6 Percent Year-over-year | North Salem Real Estate

Prices on both S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices reached their highest year-over-year gain in nearly eight years in October as they rose 0.2 percent over September. It was the seventeenth consecutive month that both the 10 and 20-city indexes increased on an annual basis. “Home prices increased again in October,” says David M. Blitzer, Chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “Both Composites’ annual returns have been in double-digit territory since March 2013 and increasing; now up 13.6% in the year ending in October. However, monthly numbers show we are living on borrowed time and the boom is fading. Eighteen cities posted lower monthly rates in October than in September. After 19 months of gains, San Francisco showed a slightly negative return. Phoenix held onto its streak and posted its 25th consecutive increase. “The year-over-year figures increased slightly from last month. Thirteen cities and both Composites posted double-digit annual returns. C...

Rebound in Metro Chicago Real Estate Market | North Salem Real Estate

The residential rebound in the metropolitan Chicago real estate market hit new heights during the third quarter of this year, according to an analysis by RE/MAX in which results for the quarter were compared to the same period last year. Sales activity in the seven-county area soared 31 percent to 33,148 units, and the median price of homes sold during the quarter gained 16 percent to $210,000. Third-quarter results exceeded those in the same period last year. They also surpassed results for the second quarter this year, with sales activity 6 percent higher and the median price up 11 percent. The year-over-year percentage increases in the median price for both the second and third quarters were greater than the year-over-year gain recorded for any other quarter over the last eight years. Another sign of strength in the market, according to the RE/MAX analysis, is that the average amount of time it took for a newly listed home to go under contract during the third quarter wa...

Did You Miss the Miami Property Bus? | North Salem NY Homes

Here is the reality in Miami property: the market has shifted. Inventory is going down every day and as a result prices are going up. And now you are probably asking, "Does that mean I missed the bus?" In my opinion, there are still great properties available for great prices, and there is always opportunity for growth in the brick and mortar industry. But as the market gets more aggressive you need to be smart on how you work your search, your selection and the negotiation process, because that will make the whole difference. Here are few of the consequences of a market like the one we have now in Miami: 1) Lack of inventory means that realtors who work with real estate investors have to become more creative finding the right property for buyers; 2) With some properties attracting multiple offers, it is important to work with an experienced realtor who has experience in this type of market and has great negotiation skills to help you to get the deal. If you think the contrac...

Well-Preserved 1810 Georgian Manor in Virginia Asks $2.9M | North Salem Real Estate

Image
Location: Ordinary, Va. Price: $2,900,000 The Skinny: When David and Mary Peebles bought this 150-acre Virginia estate in 1958, the manor house, an 1810 Georgian built by William Blackhouse , had no electricity, central heating, or plumbing. Only the third owners in the property's history, they began restoring it in 1964, retaining much of the early-19th-century character, which had been practically unaltered since construction, and adding wings to both sides of the house, as well as a swimming pool and tennis court. They moved in the following year, naming the estate Lisburne after a Massachusetts land grant given to one of their ancestors, and set about stocking it with antique furniture and artwork. By the late '90s, their collection had grown so large that they were forced to open shops where they could sell off some of their pieces. The home is now listed for $2.9M . Master Bathroom Choices: One Sink or Two? | North Salem Real Estate

Image
One sink or two? This is the classic debate for couples renovating a sizable master bathroom. There are pros and cons to both. So what's right for your bathroom? I spoke with architect Thayer Hopkins , who offered up what you need to consider about installing either a single or double sink during your master suite remodel. Brooktree Equities, Inc Save to Ideabook Email Photo “Couples these days usually prefer the idea of two sinks for one simple reason,” says Hopkins. “They lead busy lives and need access to the bathroom at the same time." On paper the double sink looks ideal. But let's walk through this two-sided argument. Dennis Mayer, Photographer Save to Ideabook Email Photo Some Benefits of 2 Sinks Personal space. With two sinks, theoretically no one will ever again spit toothpaste on your hand as you're trying to wash up. Also, your very own sink means you can keep your makeup, moisturizers or shaving kit out a...

Flood insurance ‘crisis’ may hurt St. Pete Beach real estate market | North Salem Real Estate

City officials are worried that rising federal flood insurance costs for home and business owners will pummel the local real estate market and property tax revenue. “There is a looming flood insurance crisis that is about to hit us,” Vice Mayor Marvin Shavlan told the City Commission this month. Evidence of that crisis is already apparent as real estate sales fall through when buyers discover that their flood insurance bills could be as high as $24,000 a year, Shavlan said. “It will significantly slow down the real estate market. People are scared to buy older homes,” agreed Jake Holehouse, an agent at Holehouse Insurance in St. Petersburg and a longtime St. Pete Beach resident. “We are all very concerned about the outcome,” said Doug Swain, an agent at Re/Max Preferred in St. Pete Beach. Another agent lost a big sale this month because of the flood insurance rate increase, he said. Congress, reacting to the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, changed the rules for f...

Family facing foreclosure wins lotto | North Salem Real Estate

The best loss mitigation tool is winning the lottery. CBS-Chicago recently told the story of Ricardo Cerezo out of Illinois. Cerezo and his wife were about to lose their home to foreclosure when the pair discovered old lottery tickets stuffed into a cookie jar. Cerezo’s wife told him to check the numbers or throw the tickets away. Luckily, Cerezo checked his numbers —  a move that resulted in millions of earnings overnight. Cemetery Plots In Major Chinese Cities Now Cost More Than Housing | North Salem NY Homes

Prices of cemetery plots have soared above already exorbitant housing prices in major Chinese cities, the People's Daily reports, and they are out of reach for many ordinary families. Paradoxically, while some inexpensive plots do exist, they do not sell well because many Chinese believe that fulfilling filial duties requires purchasing expensive plots for vanity. Recently, the Chinese celebrated Qingming, an annual occasion for honoring the dead in each family by sweeping their tombs. At the time, the soaring price of burying the dead came under increased scrutiny. via ibtimes.com
