The Skinny: When David and Mary Peebles bought this 150-acre Virginia estate in 1958, the manor house, an 1810 Georgian built by William Blackhouse, had no electricity, central heating, or plumbing. Only the third owners in the property's history, they began restoring it in 1964, retaining much of the early-19th-century character, which had been practically unaltered since construction, and adding wings to both sides of the house, as well as a swimming pool and tennis court. They moved in the following year, naming the estate Lisburne after a Massachusetts land grant given to one of their ancestors, and set about stocking it with antique furniture and artwork. By the late '90s, their collection had grown so large that they were forced to open shops where they could sell off some of their pieces. The home is now listed for $2.9M.
