Mount Kisco NY Marsh Sanctuary Community Gardens

Mount Kisco NY Marsh Sanctuary Community Gardens

Mount Kisco - Bedford Corners NY has a wonderful Nature Preserve called the Marsh Sanctuary on Sales Street. This 156 Acre Preserve is a nature lover’s paradise. This year a community garden opened at the Marsh Sanctuary run by the InterGenerate Community. The garden gives people who do not have the space at home a chance to grow food for their families and also learn the basics of gardening.
Neighbors join together to get away from their everyday lives filled with electronics, emails, voicemails and problems. The community gardens offer quiet sanctuary, to get your hands dirty and eventually eat what you grow.

In Bedford Corners the 90 plot, 1 acre garden opened May 1, 2010 and immediately filled up. First time growers and experienced farmers join together planting herb seeds and vegetables. Participants may live in nearby condos where they are not allowed to have a vegetable garden.
About 20 plots are used to grow produce for donation. The vegetables go to the Interfaith Food Pantry and Neighbors Link, both in Mount Kisco.

The 90 plots are 10 x 12 feet. They are rented on a sliding scale from $25 to $125 depending on how much you contribute in man hours to the community garden.
The garden had to overcome some big hurdles from the start. The biggest was no water. InterGenerate set up an irrigation system from a pond 1000 feet away, using a solar powered pump and holding tank. Gardeners can now get water throughout the garden.
